A Superhero’s Life

"Like I've said to your colleague over the phone, multiple times, it was foggy that day and I didn't see the damn tower crane," Dave spat at the insurance agent typing away at his computer with an unimpressed look. They had been going over the incident for almost two hours and had only managed to agree on one thing: that Dave needed better superhero insurance. And, possibly, a better superhero name, as well.

When he first discovered his ability to fly, at age 15, it felt like a blessing; finally, something he was good at! No longer would he be known solely as the kid with the severe acne who ate lunch by himself behind the gym. But, soon, Dave realized there was more to the superhero business

than putting on a cape and rescuing stray cats from trees.

The city would frequently turn a blind eye whenever he destroyed some public property in the pursuit of a bad guy, but private owners were never as understanding. Something about having their cars mangled by a tower crane because some asshole thought it necessary to high-speed

fly over a busy road - at rush hour, no less - while chasing a lowly pickpocketer on a bike, in a foggy winter morning, didn't sit well with them.

And now Dave's facing the possibility of having to pay thousands of dollars in damages because his damn insurance company is claiming his policy doesn't cover superhero PMS.

So, while he was sitting there, waiting for that stranger to decide his future with a click of a mouse, he couldn't stop thinking about the high school diploma he never got around to getting. It would certainly make it a lot easier to find a nice paying job if he had a little more on his resume

than 12 years of experience as a full-time superhero.
