CONCEPT ART: Estudo de processos criativos para design de personagens e cenários, na actualidade
The project aims to study creative processes for the development and graphic translation of concepts for application in the entertainment industry. These concepts are expressed in the form of concept art. Concept art, defines the universe/visual identity that serves as the basis for a project.
Concept art has an imprecise origin and it will have arisen from the need to increase the productivity of animation studios around the 1920s. It will have developed in parallel with the process of evolution of animation and expanded to other areas. The people who filled the concept position had no specific training. The artists’ creative processes resulted from the knowledge acquired in their studies in areas such as Design, Fine Arts, illustration, … with the experiences and knowledge acquired in the companies and projects for which they worked.
In order to test the study that was made about the design elements and the creative processes, I selected a short story that would serve as the basis for the execution of the concept art of the scenarios and characters.
The entire creation process was recorded, and in total were created 22 characters concepts and 1 environment concept.

In order to experiment what was studied in the investigation phase,
I selected the tale "The Masque of the Red Death" by Edgar Allan Poe
The concept for this adaptation places the story in a fictional universe of a Victorian Egypt,
also with some inspiration in steampunk.
